Helpful tidbits for parents and entrepreneurs
Meet Patti Handy, owner of Teens Cash Coach. In addition to her extensive work experience, she credits the invaluable lessons her parents taught her at a very young age as the true gift. Understanding the importance of money management early, she is passionate about sharing her financial wisdom with teens and young adults so they too, will be empowered with money smarts.
1. Tell us about your business and the service that you provide.
My business, Teens Cash Coach, is focused on educating our youth with money smarts. Financial literacy is not taught in schools and rarely taught at home. I offer an online learning 'money school' and my book and DVD program, The Prosperous Teen. I also hold 'bootcamps' throughout the year dedicated to teens
2. How did you decide to get started?
My inspiration and motivation started with my son, who is 13 years old. I'm always teaching him money skills and realized every parent needs to gift their kids with this invaluable life skill.
3. What kind of background or expertise do you have in your field?
Academically: Bachelors degree in Accounting, followed by a combined 25 years in banking and mortgage lending. I used to hold the Series 7 license and presently hold a Real Estate Brokers license and am a Certified Life Coach. My true education has really come from what my parents taught me when I was young.
4. What trends do you see in your current industry?
Unfortunately, I don't see any, which is why I'm determined to reach out myself!
5. What things do you find to be the most demanding about your job?
The time it takes to get through to the right people to share my mission. That combined with being a single mom of a teen!
6. What do you find to be the most rewarding about your job and your day to day routine?
The comments from teens that I have touched. There's nothing better than hearing I helped them or educated them in some capacity.
7. What advice would you give to someone else who is interested in starting a business like yours?
Be persistent. Don't give up. Stay focused on the passion and why you are doing this.
8. What are you most proud of as a parent-preneur?
To think I've been able to stay home with my son, raise him myself (since my divorce when he was 18 months old) and create a business that is able to help others, all while staying sane...dome days :-)
9. how have you been able to manage your time between work and your family?
Some days are better than others. I try to stay in the moment when I'm with my son and stay very focused when he is not with me.
10. What has been the most effective way for you to promote yourself?
Social media has been good, but face to face speaking engagements has probably been the best. I've also done radio interviews which has helped.
Finally: What does your "Milk Money" provide for you and your family?
Hopefully, the ability to put my son through the college of his choice.
